Balinese Gamelan Ensemble (Music 8). Instruction in practice and performance of gamelan music from Bali and Indonesia, including ritual and new music. Preparation of several works for public presentation. See schedule of classes for further detail.
Eurasian Ensemble (Music 10). Instruction in various repertoires and music cultures from the Eurasian continent. Primary focus on vocal and instrumental traditions from Central Asia. See schedule of classes for further details.
Latin American Ensembles. (Music 4 A-B) Now under the direction of Diana Nieves, the original Latin American Ensemble was created in 1986 by music professor John Schechter. In 1981 it became necessary to create a second group in order to accommodate the growing number of new students, and to provide the more experienced returning students with an opportunity to advance their skills. The beginning to intermediate VOCES and the intermediate to advanced TAKI ÑAN resulted from this expansion. The Latin American Ensembles are dedicated to the study of music, instruments and performance practices from the Native American, Iberian American, and African American traditions of Latin America. West Javanese Gamelan Ensemble (Music 5ABC). An ensemble of about 16-28 performers directed by a master musician from Indonesia, who teaches several regional styles of music from Java, including Kecapi-suling and Angklung.
