Directed by Nathaniel BermanUCSC Wind Ensemble presents Saturnalia, with music by Ticheli, Hindemith, Erickson, and a world premiere of a new work for electric guitar and wind ensemble by Dan VanHassel.

This concert features bacchanalian music by Frank Ticheli and Frank Erickson, and Hindemith’s great March from Symphonic Metamorphosis.  In addition, this event is a world premiere of Balungan, a new piece by Boston-based composer Dan VanHassel for solo electric guitar and wind ensemble. Combining influences from Javanese gamelan music and contemporary guitar rock, Balungan is an exciting work of timbral exploration.  Balungan was awarded a Barlow Commission grant for this premiere performance.
