Gamelan: Music & Dance from Java and Bali

A concert of traditional and new Indonesian music and dance featuring the UCSC West Javanese Gamelan with music and masked danced from Cirebon, West Java, directed by Undang Sumarna, drummer. With guest dancers Suzanne Suwanda and alumnus Brandon Yu.

And the UCSC Balinese Gamelan 'Swarasanti' performs kecak, music, and dance from Bali under the direction of Linda Burman-Hall.

The West Javanese program premieres Gamelan Clarity on an exquisite gamelan from the old north coast city of Cirebon, recently donated to UCSC by alumna Faridah Reese.

The Balinese program brings an energetic new mini-Kecak vocal percussion performance to the stage directed by I Gedé Oka Artha Negara, and ritual and new music on the Semar Pegulingan, "gamelan of the Love-God."

Recent honors graduate Sean Hayward brings a mixed CalArts ensemble to premiere his gamelan-influenced composition for quena flute with paired sarons, paired prepared guitars and double bass, entitled 'From A Distance.'
