Students must complete 60 graduate-level/upper division course credits. The program does not accept credit for courses completed elsewhere. The degree is designed to be completed in 2 academic years, but must be finished within 3 calendar years from date of initial enrollment (leaves are not excluded from this count). Full-time graduate students must enroll in at least 10 upper-division or graduate-level credits per quarter to be eligible for a full (20 hrs/wk) TA assignment. Part-time graduate students may enroll in a maximum of 8 course credits each quarter and are limited to a .5 (10 hrs/wk) TA assignment. If you wish to enroll in more than 19 credits, please ask Lisa Beebe (Graduate Program Coordinator) in the department office to raise your enrollment limit in myUCSC.
Each entering student is assigned a general adviser who should be consulted on all matters relating to the graduate program. At the beginning of the first quarter of enrollment, the student must meet with the adviser and complete a course plan for fulfillment of degree requirements, which must be submitted to the Music Department Office that quarter. In some instances, a student may wish to change advisers, e.g., if he/she is working with a different faculty member on the thesis. If so, after conferring with your initial adviser about that change, please also notify Lisa Beebe (firstname.lastname@example.org), Graduate Program Coordinator, of your new adviser.
