Daniel Munoz

Lecturer in Music

Daniel L Munoz is a musician and lecturer in music. He was part of the first cohort of PhD students in UCSC’s cross-cultural musicology program. After completion, he has become an active musician in LA’s music scene. As bass player for Egrets on Ergot, the band quickly emerged as “L.A.’s Best Punk Band” according to the LA Weekly in 2018. He then joined legendary death-rock band 45 Grave, scoring a spot at 2022’s Cruel World Festival at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena that included Morrissey, Blondie, Bauhaus, and Public Image Limited. He also plays electric guitar for Guilty Strangers, Crow Jane, and Lost Tapes. During lockdown, Daniel studied music production and produced several songs. His first full-length record, Memento Mori by Guilty Strangers, is set for release in early 2023. Inspired by his experience in ethnography and oral history, Daniel’s current research interest is in music scenes and subcultures, a course he is excited to teach in Spring 2023.The course will introduce ethnographic research methods applied to local, translocal, and virtual spaces and the fields of power exchange amongst the various actors and institutions in a music scene.
