Opportunities for
Non-Majors

Get Involved With Our music department

All music courses are open to non-majors, with many fulfilling general education requirements while offering exploration in the field of music. Courses in the MUSC 11, MUSC 80, and MUSC 81 series cover a wide array of topics that may interest students. Non-majors are also encouraged to audition for all performing ensembles (please see audition requirements for each ensemble here), as well as applied individual lessons (when instructor studio capacity allows). For further information regarding preparation and auditions, please contact the Music Department at music@ucsc.edu.

Applied Music and Performance

Lessons/Auditions

The Music Department has an extensive list of accomplished applied music faculty for individual instruction. Non-majors are welcome to inquire directly with applied instructors about lessons. While Music majors/minors do receive priority, instructors may take on non-majors when their studio capacity allows.

Summer Session

Make music while making degree progress!

Our broad summer curriculum is designed for UCSC students to continue making degree progress. For non-majors, our summer curriculum is filled with exciting courses that satisfy GE requirements. We aim to offer as many online/asynchronous courses as possible in the summer, to accommodate student modality needs during the “off-season”. We also welcome high schoolers and visitors from other colleges to our world-class research university.

In addition to Summer Session, our office coordinates Summer Edge exclusively for incoming students. The Edge programs allow students to earn units towards graduation while building community and confidence on campus as they transition into university life.
