UCSC Jazz Big Band: "Hello, Mr. Basie!"

Saturday, February 29, 2020 - 7:30pm
Recital Hall, Music Center (UCSC)

UCSC Jazz Big Band presents: “Hello, Mr Basie!” with guest artist Fredrick Berry.

William James “Count” Basie, in a career that spanned over six decades, was essential to bringing “swing” to prominence and ushering in the concept of jazz as a serious art form, worthy of concert halls, as well as dance halls. Fred Berry, Stanford University Jazz Professor emeritus, performed with the orchestra when Count Basie himself was still touring, and brings his memories and charts from the Count Basie Orchestra to the UCSC Big Band, creating a living link to over a hundred years of the uniquely American art form called “Jazz.”

About the UCSC Jazz Big Band:

Directed by the award winning jazz educator and trombonist, Charles Hamilton, the UCSC Jazz Big Band features over 20 of UCSC’s cross-disciplinary student musicians whose love of jazz fills the Hall with high-spirited and talented renditions of Big Band favorites, as well as originals from world class contemporary jazz artists.
