Jay Afrisando

Assistant Professor of Music

Jay Afrisando is a composer, multimedia artist, researcher, and educator. He works on aural diversity, acoustic ecology, and cultural identity, focusing on disability and environmental justice, accessibility, and decolonization of arts practices. He shares vital experiences and disseminates knowledge through multisensory and antidisciplinary practices, including video, text, spatial audio, fixed media, improvisation, and various collaborative methods.

 

His works include the multifaceted performance “[opera captions]” (2023), the tactile-audio-visual music “Embodied Music Club” (2023), and the 5-channel film installation “In Which to Trust?” (2022), among others. He has collaborated with various artists and culture bearers, including thingNY, Andy Slater, Leah Atwa, Josephine Dickinson, Jamil Haque, Gelsey Bell, Lee Noble, Alex Lubet, Katya Shilonosova, gamin, Jen Shyu, Anne Veinberg, and Djaduk Ferianto.

 

His works have been presented at various scenes and spaces, including Sound Scene at Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, HERE Arts Center, Walker Art Center’s Virtual Cinema, ARGOS Projector: The Faraway Nearby, Aural Diversity Conference at Attenborough Arts Centre, NYCEMF-ICMC at Fridman Gallery, and Linux Audio Conference at Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics.

 

He has been awarded the MAP Fund 2022, the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship 2021-22, and the Minnesota Emerging Composer Award 2016.
