Wesley Somers

PhD Student in Cross-Cultural Musicology

Wesley Somers is a PhD student in Cross-Cultural Musicology at UC Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Literature from the same institution. He is a multi-instrumentalist who studies convivial gatherings grounded in communal music practices, including Celtic diasporic music and regional music of Mexico and other parts of Latin America. His current research focuses on coloniality and power structures and their effects on aesthetics in the practice of Son Jarocho, a regional style from southern Veracruz, Mexico.
