Requirements for the D.M.A. Degree

For students entering with the bachelor's degree, a minimum of 102 credits in course work at UCSC will be required. Students must be in residence for a minimum of nine quarters and must enroll in a minimum of ten credits each quarter until they advance to candidacy.
For students entering with a master's degree from another institution, a minimum of 72 credits in course work at UCSC will be required. Students must be in residence for a minimum of six quarters and must enroll in a minimum of ten credits each quarter until they advance to candidacy.

After advancing to candidacy, students remaining in residence must take a minimum of one five-unit course per quarter. DMA students are expected to complete the degree within a maximum of 6 calendar years (leaves of absence are not excluded from this count) from entrance to the program. DMA students are also required to serve as Teaching Assistants for at least three quarters during their residency.

Each entering student is assigned an adviser who should be consulted on all matters relating to the graduate program. At the beginning of the first quarter of enrollment, the student must meet with the adviser and complete a course plan for fulfillment of requirements. The completed course plan must be submitted to the Music Department Office during the first quarter of enrollment. In some instances, a student may wish to change advisers, e.g., if he/she is working with a different faculty member on the dissertation. If so, after conferring with your initial adviser about that change, please also notify the Graduate Program Coordinator at mga.mus@ucsc.edu of your new adviser.
